Joseph Molten was born in 1746 in Berne, Switzerland, as Giuseppe Moltono. Around 1765 he moved to Amsterdam and started a barometer shop in the city’s centre, on the corner of the NZ Voorburgwal and the Lijnbaanssteeg.
This barometer is adorned with a vignette with a scythe and a sheaf of corn, symbolising agriculture.
