Coach watch made by Bernard van der Cloesen (164?-1736), one of the last clockmakers to have worked for Huygens. Born in Emmerik and having married in The Hague he became a citizen in 1688. With the establishment of the Clockmakers’ Guild in that year he became Warden and later he was Master. In 1692 he succeeded Lubbertus van der Burgh as city clockmaker, being succeeded in 1735 by one of his sons, also Bernard. In 1694 Van der Cloesen made Christiaan Huygens’ last clock for measuring the longitude at sea.
